Enough with the anti-Catholic and anti-Christian bigotry that has surfaced in the letters section of late. I have read the opinion and I see no quotes that begin “Thus says the Lord’’ nor do I see quotes from popes or saints. Rather, I see a reasoned analysis of the flaws in the prior decisions and a careful look at the logical and historical reasons why Roe was egregiously wrong from the day it was decided. I would encourage all to read the decision, or at least, the eight-page summary.

I am not sure why some seem determined to identify the faith of the justices, unless it is an attempt to besmirch their faith or their character. That is inappropriate. If the decision was couched in moral terms or based on religious precedents, it might be germane. However, the decision is not couched in those terms.

One writer referred to the “antics” of the Supreme Court. One could just as easily refer to the antics of the court 50 years ago when they invented a right to abortion, which is nowhere to be found in the Constitution, and based that right on a right to privacy, which, by the way, is also not found in the Constitution. Last week’s decision points out that those presumed rights were thought to be contained in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, or 14th amendments, which is a scholarly way of saying, “They must be in there somewhere.”

Arguments against abortion do not have to be made from a Christian perspective. I remind you of the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “It seems to me as clear as daylight that abortion would be a crime.” Also, consider the words of Christopher Hitchens, the atheistic author who once said, “I had a queasy feeling about the disposability of the fetus. This queasy feeling has not gone away.”

If abortion doesn’t make you “queasy,” maybe you need to take a long hard look at what is involved. Listen to former abortionist, Dr. Anthony Levatino as he describes what abortion entails. If you can listen to his description without feeling queasy, then I am afraid that no argument will convince you.

Finally, to the terrorists claiming that “Ruth sent you” to firebomb clinics and vandalize places of worship, I say Justice Ginsberg did not send you and she would be embarrassed by your thuggery.
